Weatherboard House Painting in Booie

A weatherboard home on a Booie hillside takes the full force of the sun, wind and rain, often without a neighbour or a stand of trees to shelter it. Weatherboard house painting in Booie starts with how each wall has weathered on your block. Robin Jenner, based 12 km away in Kingaroy, checks every board, trim and the access around the house, then quotes the preparation and coatings each wall needs.

Weatherboard and timber homes

Booie has been farmed since selectors took up blocks in its partly cleared hills in the early 1880s, and its homes range from long-standing timber farmhouses to newer acreage builds. On a hillside, the weather side of a weatherboard house can fade and crack years ahead of the sheltered side. So Robin doesn’t quote one blanket treatment. He walks every wall, checking for split boards, nails working loose, knots bleeding resin and paint lifting along the laps.

Booie homes are also large. The 2021 Census recorded an average of 3.4 bedrooms, and 98.0% of homes were separate houses, so a full weatherboard repaint here covers a lot of board.

Weatherboards with paint flaking along the board laps before preparation
  • Walls that are still sound get a wash to remove dust and chalk, then a light scuff so the new coat holds.
  • Loose paint along the laps and board ends comes off, and the edges are sanded back so they won’t print through.
  • Nails that have backed out are set below the surface and stopped, and any timber laid bare is primed.
  • Each board is coated along its lower lip before its face, working down from the eaves, so water can’t find unpainted timber.

Older paint

A Booie farmhouse can carry paint from several decades. The Australian Government’s Lead Alert guide says homes built before 1970 are most at risk of lead paint, and that dry sanding and scraping are the biggest hazards. Robin is trained in treating lead paint hazards, and on older boards he recommends testing first. If lead is present, he does the lead-safe preparation himself.

Your quote sets out the approach for each wall and why. On an open block, the side facing the afternoon sun usually needs the most work, while a wall shaded by a verandah or trees may only need a wash and a light sand.

After painting, a few habits help the boards last: keep mulch and garden beds clear of the bottom boards, check that tank overflows and downpipes drain away from the walls, and wash off any mould on shaded sides early.

Weatherboard house painting in Booie usually means one large home with more than one kind of surface. Here the timber boards and trims were prepared as timber, and the screens and doors below were primed separately, with each listed on its own in the agreed surfaces. Changing from cream to a deep green also meant allowing for full coverage over the old colour, which is worth mentioning if you are planning a big change.

Availability in Booie

Booie is near Kingaroy, where Robin focuses his work. For homes in Booie, he checks the distance, the size of the job and his schedule, then tells you whether he can quote it. Include your suburb in your enquiry so you get an answer quickly, before anyone arranges a visit.

A full weatherboard exterior is the kind of job that suits a trip out of town, so describe the whole house when you enquire: how many storeys, which walls look worst, and whether there are verandahs, gables or tanks to work around. Exterior paint needs dry weather and mild wall temperatures, so start dates follow the forecast and can move if rain is coming.

How is peeling paint dealt with?

On exposed Booie blocks, weatherboard paint usually fails first on the sunny and windward sides, along the laps and at the board ends. Robin removes anything loose, sands the edges flat so they won’t show through, and primes any bare timber. On older homes, he recommends testing the paint for lead before any scraping begins.

What if timber needs repair?

Split, soft or rotten boards are pointed out during the assessment, before you accept a quote. Small splits and open joints can be filled as part of the painting. Replacing weatherboards, sills, fascias or verandah timber is carpentry, so Robin will tell you if a carpenter needs to come first, and painting is booked once those repairs are done.

Can you paint a highset or two-storey house?

Yes. The featured job is a highset weatherboard house. Height and the slope of the block are part of the assessment, so the ladders or other access needed for upper boards, eaves, verandahs and gables are worked out and included in the quote. On a hillside block, mention the slope and how close vehicles can get to the house.
